Review: The Womack Sisters - The Womack Sisters

Aidan Greenlee

Who would've thought we'd be getting an old school soul album from none other than the Womack family in 2026? The Womack Sisters' self-titled album is their first official album under the name, but they've been singing together ever since they were little. As the daughters of Cecil and Linda Womack, nieces of Bobby Womack, and granddaughters of Sam Cooke, they've got big shoes to fill.

This short and sweet tracklist is full of songs that would've been hits in Sam Cooke's time. Heck, they should be today too! Typical of the soul music of yesteryear, most of the songs are love songs, with a mix of ballads and upbeat ditties. They're channeling bands like the Supremes as they trade between backing vocals and lead, demonstrating impeccable chemistry as a trio.

They're supported by a sharp rhythm section who span sounds like the laid back, more modern-sounding Chauffeur, peppered with shouts of trumpets and deep bari sax. Or Latin inspired tracks like If I Let You, where they aren't afraid of asking for more cowbell or a little trombone. The majority of songs on this album are fantastic, with only a few lackluster songs on the second half of the album. I think the best song on the album is My Sisters and Me which sings of sisterhood and the irreplaceable closeness of family. Who doesn't love that?

Some of the lyrics can be repetitive and may lack depth, but it's all in the spirit of keeping it old school, which I gotta respect. I think ol' Bob Womack would be proud.
